Crowns
A crown is an artificial cover, custom fitted/positioned over an existing tooth to strengthen or improve its appearance. Crowns become necessary for a number of reasons: restore decayed or damaged teeth; change the shape of a tooth; correct a bite; or fix a cosmetic problem. A dental crown can be made from gold or other advanced materials, or for a more natural look, tooth coloured porcelain only. It is manufactured in a specialist laboratory from impressions taken in the dental chair. Dental cement is used to bond the crown permanently onto the prepared tooth.
Dental crowns can be used to:
- cosmetically restore teeth damaged by large fillings or hairline fractures
- close gaps or spaces from lost teeth
- change the size and shape of teeth
- as an effective alternative where veneers may be inappropriate

Bridges
Bridges are one of the best ways to replace missing teeth. It has been a popular way to replace teeth for decades.
Bridges replace one or multiple missing teeth. They consist of an artificial tooth, made of porcelain, manufactured in a specialist laboratory which is anchored to the natural teeth on each side of the gap for support. Fitting a bridge requires the teeth on either side of the gap to be crowned. If a tooth is lost due to an accident, or is too badly decayed to save with a crown, then a bridge may be the treatment of choice.
The advancement in the materials used over time has enabled the replacement of missing teeth to emerge with brilliant aesthetic results to transform a person’s smile.
Both crowns and bridges are normally made of porcelain or gold alloy. Porcelain is more advantageous as it is strong and can be matched as close as possible to the colour of the existing surrounding teeth. It is generally resistant to staining and can be cleaned. Gold alloy is most commonly used in the back area of the mouth for its strength, hardness and durability.
